Android hearthstone image8/22/2023 ![]() With all this said, I still think Hearthstone is a fantastic addition to the mobile phone games scene, and is certainly better than 98% of other F2P games out there. Yes, it’s possible to achieve wonders with only basic cards if you’re an absolute zen master of strategy, but those kind of demonstrations can often only serve to taunt players who can’t manage the same results with their basic decks. Obviously, Blizzard is in the business of making money so they can’t cater too much to the “free forever” crowd. The problem is only growing over time, and threatens to be an increasingly problematic turn off to new players. But when new players get stuck in the lowest ranks of the ladder because they have two Rare cards to their name while their opponents often have a half dozen legendaries in their deck, it can be a frustrating experience. Grinding out gold to pay for packs is possible, and the ability to disenchant cards for crafting materials to save up for specific cards is a good way to avoid randomness. With the introduction of now two new “Adventures” and one full on “Expansion,” it’s getting harder and harder for players who don’t want to spend money (or very little) to keep up with those that do. Hearthstone is also facing a growing problem for those who actually do want to start playing and understand the mechanics. The rest are looking at something like Kim Kardashian: Hollywood and scratching their heads as to why people who have barely ever touched a video game before are throwing hundreds of dollars apiece at it. To date, only a few traditional developers have managed to pull that off. ![]() ![]() Obviously Blizzard/Activision are already well established in the gaming industry, but there isn’t a developer alive who doesn’t want to bathe in mobile cash. So while Hearthstone may very well be a fantastic extension for avid players who want to play on the go, I’m not sure whether or not the game will be able to attract new players who are the type who rise up en masse to turn no-name start-ups into multimillion dollar IPOs (though I hear there’s a search party out for Zynga these days). ![]()
